About Genoa
Genoa is one of the most beautiful port cities in Europe.
It's full of history, art and atmosphere.
The port is its throbbing heart. It is overlooked by the oldest and most fascinating zone.
Just a short walk from the Myba quay and you'll discover an unforgettable city.
The historical centre
In Genoa you can walk in the largest medieval historical centre in Europe. The zone closest to the centre is still one
of the liveliest in the city.
Medieval Genoa was a multiethnic town, with artisans, shopkeepers and noble families. The names of the "vicoli" (alleys) are there to remind us: Via dei Greci (Greek Street), Via Orefici (Goldsmiths' Street), Vico delle Compere (Shopping Alley), Salita degli Embriaci (Embriaci Rise). But a touch of poetry is also not amiss with Vico dell'Amor Perfetto (the Alley of Perfect Love).
Delimiting the eastern zone of the Historical Centre there remains a short stretch of the ancient wall erected in 1155. Porta Soprana was one of the gates into the town. The two crenellated towers can be visited and from the terrace one has a fascinating panorama.
Porto Antico
Porto Antico, the most fascinating way to enter the city. The first landing place
of the early inhabitants was located here more than 2000 years ago.
The white structure of the Bigo (Derrick) emerges from the sea in the centre of the Porto Antico scenario. One of its arms supports a panoramic lift that reaches a height of 40 metres and offers a 360° view over the city.
In the past Magazzini del Cotone (Cotton warehouses) were used to stow the cargoes to be loaded onto ships. Today there are still the cranes on the pier to remind us of those days. Inside there is space for a multi-screen cinema, a conference centre, commercial activities and restaurants.
